As many women opt for a home birth, see what it's like before deciding
Nowadays, more and more women are opting for a home birth over the sterile atmosphere of a hospital. Erin Loechner was determined to have her first birth at home, no matter what. A camera accompanied her and captured every moment.
Right on time! It’s the due date and Erin’s contractions began at eight in the morning. She began to feel nervous excitement and joy.
Because it was her first child, Erin didn't completely know what to expect. As she began to experience the reality of childbirth, the overwhelming anticipation was slightly tinged with feelings of doubt.
Luckily, there was always someone at her side to give her strength: her husband Ken was her rock in the storm.
He made sure that Erin had everything she needed. Ken set up an oasis of comfort in the living room where Erin could simply lie down.
But Erin wasn’t able to sit still for long in any location or position. Moving her body was the only thing that distracted her from the pain.
Whenever a contraction occurred, Erin doubled over in pain. Ken did his utmost to try and be a comfort to her.
Her husband reminded her softly to concentrate on her breathing. His caring demeanor was of great help to Erin.
In between contractions, Erin had a chance to rest and recuperate.
In the meantime, the midwife arrived. Her experience made Erin feel safe and secure.
Throughout the birth, Erin wanted to keep moving. Even when it became more and more of a challenge.
After just a few steps, she collapsed on her knees. Every breath was difficult.
The pain in her back was especially unbearable. Ken tried everything to ease her pain.
But even with all the pain, neither of them forgot one thing: to laugh together! These moments will be engrained in their memories forever.
The time between each contraction was becoming less and less.
Erin and Ken were determined and worked as a team.
Ken recalled the time that he and Erin first met and told her how much he loved her.
In the full throes of labor, Erin is grateful to have Ken and the midwife guiding her through.
The midwife set a soothing tone as she constantly checked Erin's progress and gave her positive feedback.
When Erin wanted to get into the birthing pool, her husband took care of everything.
With his loving support, Erin kept giving her all.
Such a touching moment!
After a time in the pool, Erin decided to move to the bed. But there's no escaping what her body is going through.
Erin's pain threshold is at its limits, yet she opts to continue on without any painkillers.
She summons her strength one last time and then: she did it!
This moment is the most beautiful and happy one in her life.
There is nothing more profound that two new parents seeing their newborn child for the first time.
Hearing her daughter cry made it all worth it.
Congratulations, Erin and Ken! May a lifetime of joy be ahead of you.
Erin’s decision to experience her first birth without painkillers was extraordinarily brave and the pictures that came from the experience demonstrate the very real challenges of giving birth this way. Although a hospital birth is also hardly free from discomfort, this approach is probably not for everyone. But Erin and Ken are glad they were in the comforting surroundings of their own home to welcome their little daughter. Well done, Erin and Ken!
