Dog rescues young baby by barking at just the right moment
Anyone who has spent a fair amount of time around children and dogs knows that they share a special bond. Sometimes it takes a little while for dogs to get used to new babies, but once they have, they are usually inseparable. This story demonstrates that bond. Back in 1993, Mindi and her husband welcomed their newborn daughter Rachel to the world. This Ohio family already had a nine-year-old daughter named Amanda and a two-year-old collie named Papillon. They were on top of the world. There was just one problem: Papillon often barked when he was in the same room as the newborn.
Papillon was a free-spirited dog; he'd chewed up countless shoes and a whole couch, and generally got himself into mischief, so they didn't think too much of it. One day, however, Mindi and the baby were alone in the house while Amanda was playing outside. The exhausted mother put her baby down for a nap and then hopped into the shower to freshen up before the baby woke.
Suddenly, Papillon started barking from the other room. Mindi was afraid he would wake the baby. She decided to cut her shower short and get the dog, but before she turned the water off, Papillon had stuck his head into the shower and was barking like mad. He clearly had something to say.
Mindi had always watched the television series "Lassie" and remembering what people on the show did when Lassie wanted their attention, she immediately reached for her towel and followed the dog. He raced to the room where Rachel was napping.
Papillon jumped repeatedly against the side of the crib. When Mindi looked in, she could barely believe her eyes: her baby's lips were blue. She grabbed the infant and checked her pulse. Something appeared to be blocking Rachel's lungs; she wasn't breathing. She called to Amanda outside and told her to call 911.
Mindi began giving her baby mouth-to-mouth. She rubbed her back, trying to loosen whatever was blocking her airway. Finally, the baby let out a cry. Mindi had never been more thrilled to hear her baby cry.
Then the ambulance arrived and took Mindi and Rachel to the hospital. Amanda stayed with Papillon and comforted the hero of the day.
At the hospital it was determined that food had gotten stuck in the baby's airway, blocking the intake of oxygen. What a close call.
Rachel made a full recovery and was filmed a year later looking happy and healthy. Here's a video of this special story:
It's so lucky that Papillon paid such close attention to his humans. It doesn't even bear think about what might have happened if Mindi had ignored the dog and continued her shower. Good boy, Papillon!
