Woman gives herself a 13-inch waist to please her husband
People sometimes do extreme things in the name of love. They find someone they adore above all else and would do almost anything to please them.
But sometimes this wish to please can lead to decisions that many might find strange or even creepy. Such was the case with Ethel Granger.
Ethel was born in Cambridgeshire, England in 1905. She met the astronomer William Arnold Granger as a young woman and they were married in 1928.
From the very beginning of their relationship, William had told Ethel that he loved corsets and tiny waists.
But by the end of the 1920s, the once popular corset look was completely out of style. Loose-fitting dresses and well-tailored women's suits were much more en vogue.
But Ethel wanted to please her husband, so she began wearing a corset regularly.
At first, William was happy for her to just wear it during the day, but soon he requested that she also wear it at night.
Ethel's waist was squeezed tighter and tighter, making it ever smaller.
William's strong ideas about what was attractive and feminine didn't end there. He also asked his wife to start wearing extremely high-heeled shoes and to get numerous piercings on her face and body.

Ethel's waist continued to shrink until she entered the Guinness Book of World Records with a waist diameter of just 13 inches. Her record has yet to be broken.
Ethel is famous in fashion and body art circles to this day. In September 2011, the Italian version of the fashion magazine "Vogue" dedicated a volume to her.

Whether one finds Ethel's body shape that she — or rather, William — created beautiful or revolting depends on who you ask. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say.

We don't know how Ethel felt about her transformed figure. She passed away in 1982.
One could assume that as Ethel went along with all of these requests, she was happy with the result. However, it is kind of sad that her husband couldn't find her beautiful as she already was...
