A street dog covered in tumors catches the eye of a good samaritan
Considering there are over a million stray dogs roaming the streets of Mexico City, it's perhaps understandable that most people keep on walking when they see one. But when one passerby spotted a dog in serious trouble, she decided to stop and do something about it.
The dog was not only starving, but his body was covered with cancerous tumors. Deeply moved by the sight of him, she brought him to animal rights activist Dalia Gámez. Dalia took the dog under her care and named him Bobby. She immediately took Bobby to a veterinary hospital where the received a thorough examination.
The vets estimated that Bobby must be around two years old. They prescribed chemotherapy for the tumors. As the treatment itself was quite aggressive, Dalia tried her best to keep Bobby's spirit up to help him pull through. She kept him company all the way through chemo and spoiled him as best she could.
Bobby went through eight sessions of chemotherapy in two months – a tremendous ordeal even for a well-nourished animal. Dalia sometimes has serious doubts that he would pull through, but she was determined to give him the best possible chance.
To Dalia's surprise and amazement, Bobby soon turned a corner in his recovery and his wounds began to heal quickly. His new fur grew in thick and shiny, covering up his scars.
Bobby's mood perked up too and the next thing she knew, he was running around like any normal, healthy dog. Bobby's story was so remarkable, he became the star of the neighborhood and something of a local sensation – everyone wanted to visit the amazing dog. Bobby's fame helped Dalia on her next mission: finding a loving forever family to adopt him and it didn't take long until that mission was accomplished.
With bittersweet feelings, Dalia said goodbye to Bobby and left him to the loving care of his new family. Bobby was finally able to enjoy his life to the fullest. He has only a couple of scars as evidence of the struggle he had to overcome.
Every living creature deserves to be given a chance and Bobby's transformation is a testament to the good people who live that sentiment. Bobby was a lost cause to most passersby. But thanks to a good samaritan and Dalia, he is now a healthy, happy dog.
