Horrifying! Dog found squeezed into suitcase.
It's unbelievable that something like this could actually happen: a pit bull was found stuffed into a suitcase and left by a trash container on the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. Luckily the dog was able to bite a small breathing hole in the suitcase and survive long enough for rescuers to find it just in time. If help had come just 20 minutes later, the poor dog would have been on its way to the garbage dump and probably never discovered. The fact that the dog is still alive is pretty miraculous, which is why she was named "Milagros," the Spanish word for miracle.
When rescuers arrived on the scene they immediately cut a bigger hole in the suitcase so the dog could poke its head out and breath properly. This was an important first step because they knew that it would take a while longer to break open the suitcase. When the dog was finally freed, they discovered several bite wounds on her body.
Milagros was taken to a veterinarian and has since made a full recovery from her injuries. Despite her ordeal she is slowly allowing herself to trust humans again, quite an amazing thing considering how badly she was treated by her former owner. She is still a bit hesitant, but it's getting better day by day.
This horrible case of animal abuse caused a wave of outrage in the Spanish media, but at least this led to something positive: many people contacted the animal shelter and wanted to adopt Milagros. The police also took the case seriously and began searching for the dog's owner.
The police did end up finding the owner and it appears that the case was not quite as sinister as it first appeared. Sergio M.J. and his girlfriend had been taking care of Milagros, his aunt's dog. Sergio also owned a pit bull and the two dogs did not get along. Sergio made sure to lock them in separate rooms when he wasn't home to avoid any nasty confrontations. But obviously his efforts were not enough.
One day when Sergio came home he found Milagros lying on the floor bleeding profusely from several wounds. His pit bull was also injured but not badly. As far as Sergio could tell, his aunt's dog was dead. In a panic Sergio tried to revive the dog but to no avail. Not knowing what else to do with the supposedly dead body, he packed it in a suitcase and brought it out to the trash container in front of his house.
As it turned out, Sergio had not abused the dog as was initially thought. But even if Milagros had been dead, why had he disposed of her body in such a disrespectful way? Sergio is still probably asking himself this very same question and chances are he won't be doing anything like that again. This story also teaches a good lesson: even if you think an animal is dead, always contact a veterinarian to be absolutely certain. Because Milagros is living proof that even when it looks like they have nothing left, some animals are not willing to give up on life so easily.
