Dog freaks out and ends up finding an abandoned child
With two broken legs, several broken ribs and a huge amount of carpet fabric in her stomach, little Petunia was one of the worst cases the animal rights activists from the Delta Animal Shelter had ever seen. When the dog was brought to the animal shelter in Escanaba, Michigan, in April 2016, it was clear that she had been horribly abused. She was completely traumatized and shuddered with fear when her rescuers tried to touch her.
Fortunately, the volunteers at the shelter were able to nurse Petunia back to health and restore her trust in humans. She made a quick recovery and soon she was adopted. Her new owners named her "Peanut" and brought her to her new, loving home. Life had taken a big turn for Peanut and the future looked bright.
But one morning in March, 2017, Peanut started behaving very strangely. Her family noticed that she seemed extremely agitated and tried to calm her down. Peanut, however, refused to settle down. She ran around the house like crazy, scratching at the door to get out. Not knowing what else to do, her new owners opened the door and watched her bolt out into the neighboring field.
Peanut's owners followed as fast as they could. They finally caught up to her at a ditch where she stood looking intently at something in the mud. When they looked down, they couldn't believe their eyes — there was a naked, three-year-old curled up at the bottom of the ditch.
They immediately called for an ambulance and carried the girl to their house. When the girl was finally safe at the hospital and out of danger, Peanut's new owner wrote this moving message to the Delta Animal Shelter:
Today, Peanut was responsible for saving the life of a 3-year-old little girl. About 11am this morning, Peanut started going crazy at our house. She was running up and down the stairs, barking and yelping. She then went and got my husband, who was in the garage working on some projects, and alerted him that she wanted to go outside. He said he could hear her running around upstairs but didn’t understand why. He let her outside where she went barreling into the field behind our house at full speed. My husband followed her and to his surprise, he found a naked, shivering, 3-year-old girl curled up in a ball. He scooped her up, wrapped her in his sweatshirt, and brought her inside. He called 911 and reported the incident. By the time the ambulance and police arrived, the little girl could only say one thing – 'doggie.'
Thanks to Peanut, a little girl's life was saved today. She has been such a blessing to us, and now to others. Words cannot express how grateful we are that we have Peanut in our lives and how amazing she is. She is a part of our family now and thanks to wonderful people like you at the shelter, she is alive. Without her, not only would she have been gone from this world, but the life of this little girl might have been taken as well."
The young girl is now doing well and is staying with social services until an investigation is completed. Authorities obviously want to know how she ended up in the ditch.

As for Peanut, nobody can really explain how this brave dog was able to sense the danger the girl was in. Some believe that Peanut's own history of suffering has made her particularly sensitive to the suffering of others. Whatever the case, the rescued girl will be forever grateful. Good job, Peanut! You are one very special dog!
