Given abortion pills after a miscarriage, doctors couldn't believe it

Two-time parents Michelle and Ross Hui from Newbridge, Ireland were overjoyed when they learned they were going to have a third child. But very early in her pregnancy — just over six weeks — Michelle suddenly began bleeding while on her way to work.

She went to the hospital and after undergoing five scans administered by two different physicians, it was confirmed that she had lost the baby. Michelle and Ross were devastated.

To prevent any infection from developing, Michelle was given two kinds of pills to bring about a medical (i.e. non-surgical) abortion, expelling the dead fetus and any remaining tissue.

Unfortunately, a follow-up exam revealed blood clots in Michelle's uterus and she was scheduled in for a surgical procedure to remove them. It was then that her story took a most unexpected turn.

As doctors at Rotunda Hospital in Dublin performed a screen in preparation for the procedure, they were perplexed to discover a heartbeat in Michelle's uterus. Somehow, Michelle was pregnant, despite the miscarriage and having subsequently taken the abortion pills. It turned out she had been pregnant with twins, but only one of them miscarried. Doctors theorized that the presence of the blood clots may have obscured the second fetus during previous scans.

"After all we had been through, I didn’t want to  get my hopes up. The doctor went out and came back in with a more senior doctor and he did the scan again and he said, 'You are not going to believe it, we’ve got a heartbeat'"

Baby Megan was born in February 2014. Her mother described her as "a healthy pudding of a baby."

Older siblings Mya and Noah were overjoyed. It turned out that Megan's case was so unusual, it was written about in medical journals. Normally when a twin pregnancy miscarries, both fetuses are lost. The Hui family was certainly fortunate that one of the twins survived and even more so given that the pills should have have caused a termination of the full pregnancy.

But it seems that even further good fortune was in their future. Not all that much later, they were to be the parents of twins after all! In October 2015, they welcomed Jacob and Oscar into the world.

They certainly are all adorable, are they not?
