Woman is publicly shamed for breastfeeding her son
Katherine Clarke of Australia is the proud parent of four-year-old Ryder. She's felt extremely close to him since day one and was shocked by the reactions she got when she posted a photo of them on Instagram.
Ryder is already four years old, but he still breastfeeds. His mom thinks it's the most natural thing in the world and believes it's part of her motherly duties.
But when she posted photos of her son at her breast, many wrote hateful comments, calling her sick and perverse. Katherine couldn't understand all the uproar.
She's letting her son decide when he wants to stop breastfeeding.
"I'm not constantly feeding him," she said. "Just once a week or so. When he sees me breastfeeding his 19-month-old brother, he also wants some."
She enjoys her connection with him and feels it's especially strong when breastfeeding. That's why she can't really understand people's reactions.
She's not sure when the children will feel ready to stop. "I feel a little bad for the people who think it's weird. Comments from women are especially heartbreaking. They must feel ashamed or embarrassed about breastfeeding and I hope that will soon change."
Until then, she hopes that people can learn to not only accept her decision, but also to speak more freely about breastfeeding.
It really is very natural to breastfeed, though I must admit that four seems pretty old. Bravo to Katherine nonetheless for standing up to the criticism.
