With a caul: Photos of babies born while still inside the amniotic sac
Warning: This article contains images that some readers may find disturbing.
A birth is one of the most wondrous events anyone can witness. But sometimes they come with an added surprise...
When a baby is "born with a caul," the water doesn't break and the newborn comes out while it's still inside the intact amniotic sac or at least has part of the sac covering its body.
These types of birth are rare, happening more often though when the child is delivered by C-section.
Pictures capturing these magical moments have become an internet sensation.
In the past, a caul was considered a good omen for the child. It meant that the child would be very smart, friendly, and eloquent. The superstitious even believed that they had the gift of telepathy.
Whether or not this kind of birth really has a special meaning is up for debate. But one thing's for sure: it certainly makes for some very unique and beautiful photos!
